Scenes / Unseen, Maeve Jackson
October 27 – December 9, 2017
This exhibition features the short film “the beautiful”: The Stories She Tell, a collaboration between Maeve Jackson (visionary & filmmaker), Destinny Fletcher (poet & audio vocals), and Nadirah Dotson (model).
As an emerging artist, Maeve Jackson is resistant to being associated with any single medium though she prefers working with video as her platform. Her recent works investigate the cultural codes that have been placed on female identity throughout time. Jackson is a storyteller; examining public opinion and hoping to foster an open exchange of dialogue between the viewer, the subject and herself. As a filmmaker, Jackson questions why a piece must end with the closing credits and offers her audience the chance to reflect on the moving images they witnessed by viewing two-dimensional film stills, polaroids, transfer prints and drawings that expand upon the subject.
In “the beautiful”: The Stories She Tell Maeve Jackson blurs identities. The identity of the woman is unknown. The identity of the speaker is unknown. By unraveling the scarf, the woman reveals her hair as the internal thoughts about black self-image are projected through Fletcher’s spoken word:
If my hair could tell stories
She would speak volumes
Jackson’s work has been shown in numerous group exhibitions in Milwaukee, as well as Brooklyn, NY; Greensboro College, NC; Chicago,IL, and Barcelona, Spain. Jackson recently attended an artist-in-residence program at Hotel Pupik in Austria and is now making the steps towards her next residency experience. Currently, Maeve is working as a freelance videographer & photographer and co-runs the local artist initiative, MOXY Studio. She has worked with numerous groups such as: Temporary Resurfacing, Milwaukee Film, and the Milwaukee Art Museum.
