Since his last solo exhibition at The Alice Wilds in 2019, McCullough’s focus has shifted slightly from exploring the plastic properties of photographic film to a higher concentration on the natural wonders of light; moving further away from artificial manipulation.
In his own words…
My work is influenced by the wonder and mystery of the natural landscape around me. I am interested in exploring the vast and invisible space between the camera lens and the recorded image. Using the magical properties of light as a subject and as a tool for abstraction, I look for in between moments in the landscape to reveal nature’s expressive detail. The use of infrared light and chance-based darkroom drawings allow me to work in unseen and unplanned moments of the photographic process, creating connections between observation and expression. At Night features photographs shot during all hours of the day, but references the atmosphere of night and the darkness, mystery, and beauty that it brings.
